Despite of its reputation as a sleepy town, Ella is still one of the most breathtaking destinations in Sri Lanka. Bordered by the Hantana Mountain Ranges in the Hill Country, the town affords visitors a view of the resplendent Hambantota Coast through the Ella Gap, with the Kirinda Lighthouse jutting out like a sentinel in the vast coastline.
The surrounding hills of Ella are characterized by tea plantation and waterfalls of Diyaluma and Bambarakanda which provide a beguiling backdrop to the village sitting contentedly at the southern ridge of the highlands. The area can be a good point to start an afternoon stroll which can change to a brisk walk or a trek depending on the trail. The nearby Wellawaya is accessible from Ella-a place that encourages extreme sports such as rock climbing, abseiling and paragliding.
