The Obelisk
The Obelisk is located in the heart of Samar Provincial Capitol Park in Catbalogan, which is seems rightfully so since this towering structure represents the four major and most significant events in the locality's long and colorful history. The first of the events is the arrival of the Jesuit missionaries to the province of Samar.
The next event is the rebellion against the Spaniards which happened in Palapag known as the Sumoroy Rebellion. Third is the arrival of Queen Isabella II from Spain which carried a Royal Decree that declares Samar as a province in 1841. The last event that The Obelisk represents is the Balangiga Encounter between the local revolutionaries and the American soldiers during the Philippine-American War. This battle was said to be the single worst defeat for the Americans during that war.
