Renowned as the haven of the Orang Ulu tribe, Marudi or Claude Town as it had been known in the past is the central trading town of Baram district and the largest riverine village of Kuala Baram. Marudi was once used by Charles Hose as a station point for his sentries atop a knoll overlooking the Batang Baram, now the Fort Hose, along with a museum (Baram District Museum) that features some valuable display related to the history of this town.
Visitors can roam around the town to get a closer look at the Chinese Temple which dates back to over 1,000 years. From there they can turn to the Taman Tasik Recreation Park nestled on the hilltop that gives a rewarding view of the river and the countryside.
Immersion into any of the longhouses nearby such as the Long Lama, Long Moh and Long Selaban can be a good starting ground to mingle with and understand the ways of the locals. Here visitors are guaranteed a good experience of the warm hospitality of the tribe folks headed by a turi rumah (headman). They are usually greeted with a glass of tuak and a welcome dance especially when special festivals such as weddings or rare ancestor festivals such as Gawai Antu take place. Visitors can also have a chance to take a longboat trip or longhouse safari that lasts for a week or more.
A great time to visit Marudi is during the celebration of the Baram Regatta which is, to many Malaysians, not just a mere celebration or attraction but a way to honor and remember an event in the history of their town. Here visitors can see a number of gutsy young paddlers from different countries competing for a boat race on the river.
