Literally meaning "Father Island," Chichi-Jima is the largest in the Ogasawara mini-archipelago, as well as its tourist hotbed, with the modest collection of hotels and restaurants. Shaped like a padlock, visitors easily set their eyes on this patch of primarily pristine island south of mainland Japan.
While there are no big-ticket attractions found in Chichi-Jima, the island takes pride on its significant role in World War II as the site of the country's main radio tower and a constant target of US missiles. The rugged terrain and the various mountains that define the island invite hikers of various levels of expertise, promising a sweeping view of the immaculate forests and hills, as well as the pocket beaches.
