Because of its wooden cottages, crisscrossing train tracks, lavish Western-style churches, and rustic charm that beckon newlyweds to stay for their honeymoon, Shimla is dubbed the "Queen of the Hills" and "a patch of England's Victorian Age" frozen in Himchal Pradesh's mountains. Named after the Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali, Shimla used to be the summer retreat for the British Raj or British Indian Empire back in 1864.
The second oldest Catholic church in Northern India is the city's top attraction, the Christ Church, which lures devotees and design enthusiasts alike with its stain glass artworks that represent the Catholic virtues of faith, hope, charity, fortitude, patience, and humility.
Another religious haven worth a visit is the hilltop Jakhu Temple, where the monkey-god Hanuman was said to have rested while on his journey to the Himalayas. Staying true to its legend, there are several mischievous monkeys inhabiting the temple's surroundings, and one must be on guard as these primates become easily attracted to shiny things and gadgets.
For those who want a glimpse of the swanky lifestyle the British Raj used to have, the Viceregal Lodge atop Observatory Hill sports well-manicured gardens, teak-paneled walls, and lavish furniture fit for the nobility.
Upon descending the mountain, one may want to head to The Mall, a strip of shops, restaurants, cafés, and clubs where tourists can hangout and people-watch.
