A boat trip for first time travelers of Ilulissat Icefjord can be both nerve-wracking and enjoyable, as you hear the sound of ice ripping the hull of the boat slicing through icy waters. Forty kilometers from the Greenland Ice Sheet to Disko Bay, Ilulissat Icefjord ranks 16th in the new list of wonders of the modern world under the category of natural landscapes. Studied by climatologists for over 250 years, the place has somehow enlightened scholars in understanding the effects of climate change and icecap glaciology. However, locals and tourists alike agree that Ilulissat (Icebergs) is just the place to relax and enjoy its scenery of ice-glaciers over mountainous areas, with baileys whiskey in hand topped with fish soup stewed after ice-fishing in one of its picture-perfect lakes.
Ilulissat Icefjord not only offers scientists and tourists close proximity to calving glacier fronts as it cascades down ice sheets and unto ice-choked fjords, it also affords backpackers one of the best adventure thrills though amazing fjords and highly scenic combination of rock, ice and sea, along with the dramatic sounds produced by the moving ice. Here glaciers flow at a rate of 60-100 feet a day, resulting in around 20 billion tons of icebergs calved off and passing out of fjord annually.
The picturesque sites that adorn Ilullisat have made tourism its primary industry, with people of all kinds of persuasions establishing residences in the town's colorful little villages. Most notable among its residents is Jens Rosing, a notable artist known for his works on Greenland's Coat of Arms, as well as writing children's books enjoyed throughout Greenland.
