Buenos Aires Information

Buenos Aires is a city that has had its share of ups and downs over the course of its history. Founded as Argentina's capital in the 16th century, it first experienced wealth and prosperity as a trading and port town connecting the country to Europe. In the 19th century, however, its economy collapsed under the rule of a military government. The city recovered and prospered once again, until an economy crisis struck in 2001.

Today, Buenos Aires is on the way up once more. The third largest city in South America, it shelters about 30 percent of Argentina's total population. It even is one of the wealthiest cities in the world, ranking 13th. But more so than anything, it is a tourist paradise - enticing some three million visitors every year.

Paris of South America

Buenos Aires, with its buzzing nightlife, grand cafes, wide halls, and lovely buildings, has often been called as the “Paris of South America.” Indeed, it is perhaps the most European of all the cities in the continent: even the majority (90 percent) of its population is of Spanish, Portuguese, and French descent. Not to mention its architecture, dominated by colonial buildings with a sprinkling of modernist monuments.

Shopping is at a premium here, especially with the city's wide collection of malls and shops. A definite tourist favorite, though, is heading to Buenos' Aires restaurants and parillas (grills). It is said that the best steaks and barbecues in the world can be tasted here.

Land of the Porteños

The Buenos Aires inhabitants are usually called “Porteños,” or “the people of the port” - owing to the city's trading history. They are known for their colorful culture, and are responsible for creating one of the most popular dances in the world: the tango. In fact, there are lots of dance schools scattered throughout the city dedicated to teaching the unique moves to visitors.

Not to mention that lively festivals mark each month of the year in the city, like the Tango Festival, Gay Pride Weekend, and many others. Little wonder, then, that Buenos Aires has captured the imagination of many, ranking 2nd in a poll for the most desirable cities in the world.
